Air Fryer Frozen French Fries: Time, Temp & How To
Frozen fries are the air fryer's killer demo. They come out closer to fast-food fries than anything an oven produces, in less time, with no oil added. This is the recipe most people's air fryer experience starts with — and it actually delivers.

How to air fry frozen french fries
- Put fries straight from the freezer into the air fryer basket. Don't thaw, don't add oil — they're already coated from the factory.
- Spread in a single layer. If your air fryer is small, cook in two batches rather than piling them up.
- Cook at 400°F for 9 minutes.
- Pause and shake the basket vigorously. Reposition any fries that are stuck together.
- Cook another 9 minutes (18 total). Pull when they look golden and crispy on the outside.
- Salt immediately while they're still hot — salt sticks better when there's a little surface moisture.
Tips that actually matter
- Don't preheat for fries. They cook better starting from a cold basket because the surface dries out gradually.
- Shake at least once. Fries piled against each other steam instead of crisping where they touch.
- For extra crispy: spray lightly with oil before the second half. Adds about 30 calories per serving but real difference in texture.
- Different brands cook differently. McCain and Ore-Ida tend to need the full 18 minutes; thinner shoestring fries need 13-15.
Common mistakes
- Overloading the basket. The most common reason for soggy air fryer fries. Cook in two batches if you have to.
- Adding oil. Frozen fries are pre-coated. Extra oil makes them greasy without making them crispier.
- Not shaking. Without a shake, half your fries will stick together and steam.
- Salting before cooking. Salt draws out moisture; the fries get soggy. Salt right after they come out.
Variations
- Sweet potato fries: same temp, drop time to 14-16 minutes. They're pre-cut thinner.
- Crinkle-cut fries: same as straight-cut but you might need an extra minute for the deeper grooves to crisp.
- Curly fries: cook at 380°F instead of 400°F so the curls don't burn before the centers cook through.
- Tater tots: same approach, 14-16 minutes total.

Frequently asked questions
How long to air fry frozen french fries?
18 minutes total at 400°F for standard cut. Shake at the 9-minute mark. Thinner fries (shoestring) need 13-15 minutes; thicker (steak fries) might need 22.
Do you preheat the air fryer for frozen fries?
No. Frozen fries actually cook better starting from a cold basket. Preheating heats the outside before the inside has a chance to thaw evenly.
Do you need oil for frozen fries in the air fryer?
No. Frozen fries are pre-coated with oil at the factory. Adding more makes them greasy without making them crispier. For extra crispy, a light spray after the shake is the most you should add.
Why are my frozen fries soggy in the air fryer?
Almost always because you overcrowded the basket. Air can't circulate around fries that are piled on top of each other. Cook in two batches and shake at the halfway point.
What temperature for frozen fries in the air fryer?
400°F (205°C) is the standard. Some thicker cut fries do well at 380°F for an extra few minutes; thinner fries can handle 410°F if your air fryer has the setting.
Can you reheat fries in the air fryer?
Yes, and they come out better than the microwave. 350°F for 3-4 minutes restores the crispness. This works for restaurant leftovers as well as home-cooked.
