How to air fry sweet potato
- Scrub the potato. No need to peel; the skin gets crispy and is delicious.
- Pierce all over with a fork (5-6 times per side). This lets steam escape so it doesn't explode.
- Rub with 1 teaspoon oil and a pinch of salt.
- Preheat the air fryer for 3 minutes at 380°F.
- Place potato in the basket. Cook for 25-35 minutes depending on size, flipping halfway.
- Test with a fork. If it slides in easily, it's done. If there's resistance, give it 5 more minutes.
- Let cool for 3-5 minutes before slicing — they're lava hot inside.
Tips that actually matter
- Medium sweet potatoes (about 8 oz) take 25 minutes. Large ones (12-14 oz) take 35-40.
- Two potatoes at a time work fine if there's space between them. Three is usually too many.
- For sweet potato fries: cut into 1/2-inch strips, toss with 1 tbsp oil + 1/2 tsp salt + paprika, cook at 400°F for 14-16 minutes shaking halfway.
- For mashed/baked use, slice open while hot and let steam escape; the texture is fluffier.
Common mistakes
- Not piercing. Sealed potatoes can rupture in the basket. Always pierce.
- Cooking three or more at once. They don't cook evenly without space.
- Pulling too early. A sweet potato that resists the fork at all isn't done. Trust the fork test.
- Cooking pre-sliced rounds the same way as whole. Slices need 12-15 minutes max.
Variations
- Sweet potato fries (1/2 inch cuts): 400°F, 14-16 minutes, shake at 8 minutes.
- Sweet potato wedges (1 inch): 400°F, 18-20 minutes, flip at 10.
- Sweet potato rounds (1/2 inch slices): 380°F, 14-16 minutes, flip halfway.
- Cubed sweet potato: 380°F, 16-18 minutes, shake twice.
- Stuffed sweet potato: cook whole, slice open, top with toppings (chili, black beans, taco fillings).
